DAY 1MUSCAT TO NIZWA

On arrival into Muscat, set out with a driver/guide in a 4WD into the mountains of Oman through one of the most majestic canyons in the Hajar Mountain Ranges, Wadi Bani Awf.

Oman has a diversity of landscape from dried-up river beds, canyons, deserts and plains many of which you will encounter on your journey up to the peak.

During the climb of over 2000 vertical metres, visit secluded villages, and terraced farming villages clinging to the sides of the canyon. Arrive at Nizwa, the ancient capital of Oman and check-in to your hotel.

DAY 2NIZWA

After breakfast, explore Nizwa and surrounding areas. Nizwa is the capital of Oman’s interior, the birthplace of Islam in the Sultanate and an historic seat of learning now renowned for its 17th century round fort and Souk famous for intricately hand-carved khanjars (daggers) and ornamental silver jewellery.

Spend time exploring Nizwa Fort before searching for keepsakes and bargains in the corridors of Nizwa Souk.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, return to hotel for an afternoon leisure.

DAY 3NIZWA TO JEBEL AKHDAR

Depart Nizwa this morning for a day of touring before ascending the mountains to the cooler air and fertile environs of Jebel Akhdar. En-route, explore the hillside, mudbrick village of Misfat Al Abriyeen with its fascinating history, agriculture and ingenious falaj irrigation systems. Enjoy a traditional lunch at typical Omani house in the village, now converted to a Bed & Breakfast.

Continue to Jabrin Castle, often described as one of the most beautiful castles in all of Oman. Originally built as the summer residence for Imam (ruler) the castle was also built with defensive strongholds with dungeons, secret passages, rooms and ceilings decorated with fine carvings & paintings.

From Jabrin, settle in for a memorable drive up to the high plateau of Jebel Akhdar.

DAY 4JEBEL AKHDAR TO MUSCAT

Savour the surprising cooler climate of the mountains and explore Jebel al Akhdar which is famed for fruit orchards laid out in terraces along the mountain sides and irrigated by traditional falaj irrigation systems.

Tiny villages, including picturesque Saiq, Al Ain, and the abandoned Wadi Bani Habib, dot the landscape and overlook a spectacular vistas of peaks, gorges and wadis.

The roses of Jebel al Akhdar fill the air with fragrance from March to April, when they are in full bloom, and rose water is distilled in the homes of the villagers.

After lunch return to Muscat.

DAY 5MUSCAT

Spend the day exploring Muscat. Start the morning with an unforgettable visit to the extraordinary Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque which stands proudly against the low-rise city skyline. Head to Mutrah to visit the Bait Al Zubair Museum with a photo stop by Qasr Al Alam (His Majesty’s Palace) before heading to the lively Mutrah Souk in the afternoon. Explore the tangle of frankincense-filled laneways, bargain with friendly store-holders, and see what treasures you can find.

End your journey in Muscat.
