Arrive into Muscat and transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Make the most of the facilities at your hotel, or even take a cab to the waterfront at Mutrah, take a seat at a café and enjoy the best of the afternoon as it fades into evening.

Start your day with a visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (Closed on Fridays), which is an architectural marvel and is perhaps the new landmark of the city.
Completed in 2001, the Grand Mosque stands proudly as a contemporary place of worship, serving as a spiritual landmark for modern Oman, projecting the values and aspirations of the Omani people. It is home to one of the largest Crystal Chandeliers in the world – weighing 8 tonnes and suspended from the 50 metre high central dome – as well as a hand stitched Persian carpet that took 600 weavers four years to make, measuring 70 by 60 metres and weighs over 21 tonnes.

Leaving the Grand Mosque, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before heading to the seafront suburb of Mutrah for the afternoon. Explore Mutrah souk amid the fragrant smoke of frankincense – the perfume of the gods – in the air. Your haggling urges filled, make your way to the Oman Museum, a photo-stop at Al Alam Palace flanked by the ancient Forts of Mirani and Jalali, built by the Portuguese during their reign in Oman.

After breakfast transfer from your hotel to the charming fishing village of Qantab, a short drive from Muscat. Here join a cooking class at Bait Al Bilad, a fully restored and authentic village house on the beach. Learn to prepare local specialities like coconut kingfish curry, okra and tomato cury, traditional flat bread, and the tiny and deliciously honeyed lokhaimat for dessert.

In the mid-afternoon, board a luxury vessel for a stunning sunset cruise around Muscat before returning to your hotel or exploring some of Muscat’s emerging culinary hot-spots for dinner.

Depart Muscat and head south-east through picturesque towns towards the turtle sanctuaries around Ras Al Jinz. En-route, cool off with a swim at Fins Beach and also visit the Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater with a sparkling, blue-green pool at the bottom.

Visit the small fishing village of Tiwi and the much larger Sur, home to an ancient harbour that shelters traditional timber Dhows still in use today for fishing and regional trade. Later that evening you will be guided down to the beach of Ras Al Jinz for an unforgettable evening. Watch giant sea turtles make their way slowly up the beach to within meters of where they were hatched, up to 50 years before, to continue the legacy they have inherited. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see one of the largest turtle reserves in the world.

Today is a day of adventure, leaving the most easterly point of Oman and heading for the golden sands of the desert. Visit a welcoming Bedouin household, enjoy a traditional meal and folkloric song. Continue through the dunes to your overnight accommodation at a comfortable desert camp.

You will not forget the desert sunset in a hurry.

Sharqiya Sands: Overnight at Desert Nights Camp | Desert Palm | Arabian Oryx | Safari Camp.

Leave the honey-coloured dunes behind and return to Muscat for some final shopping, dining and exploration of this fascinating, low-rise waterfront city.
