Day 1Muscat at Leisure

Arrive into Muscat, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Make the most of the facilities at your hotel, or even take a cab to the waterfront at Mutrah, take a seat at a café and enjoy the best of the afternoon as it fades into evening.

Day 2Muscat city tour

Start the day by heading to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. Completed in 2001 and with space for 20,000 worshippers, it is one of the city’s architectural highlights.

Visit the Mutrah Corniche. Muscat’s waterfront is the gateway to the city’s past. Take a stroll along the foreshore before visiting sites like the Al Alam Palace – the ceremonial home of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos – and the two sentinels in the form of Fort Jalali and Fort Mirani.

Explore Bait Al Zubair museum which commemorates cultural heritage, dress and weaponry of Oman. Perhaps have lunch in the Khuwair district with its fantastic traditional Middle Eastern foods. Elsewhere, the Ruwi District has distinctive Omani and Indian eateries.

Mutrah Souk reopens after 4pm and trades until late in the evening so spend a few hours exploring its warren of stalls. For a contemporary consumer experience, visit the Muscat Grand Mall. It’s the city’s largest mall and it offers everything from high end European labels to local Omani fashion designers.

End the day by either heading to Left Bank in Al Qurum, one of Muscat’s only lounge bars and restaurants. Alternatively, guests can enjoy dinner while taking a dhow cruise on Muscat Harbour.

Day 3On the water or explore the ancient capital of Nizwa

Rise early and get out on the coastal waters to watch literally thousands of dolphins frolic in the early morning sun. The rich seas teem with these affectionate creatures and it’s an exuberant and inspiring way to start the day. Be sure to book your dolphin tour in advance.

There are a few options from here. If you can’t get enough of all things aquatic then take a trip to Bandar Kharyan. It’s one of Oman’s most popular snorkelling spots with pristine coral reefs to explore. Keen snorkellers and scuba divers can also visit the Oman Dive Centre.

Or if the pages of Oman’s cultural history are more appealing, keep your feet firmly on terra-firma and journey to Nizwa to visit the imposing 17th century Nizwa Fort and adjacent, lively souk. From there head to the elegant Jabrin Castle and the pretty village of Birkat Al Mauz.

Return to your hotel for an evening at leisure.
